Frankfurt 2007 Objectives

Imprimir

The aims as the guest of honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair are as follows:

  • To highlight the strength and the leading role of the publishing industry in Catalonia
  • To increase recognition worldwide of Catalan literature and to promote the translation of Catalan works into other languages
  • To present the Catalan culture in all its diversity on an international level

There are two, well differentiated, stages being pursued as part of the 2007 Frankfurt project:

1. During the course of a year commencing in October 2006 at the Frankfurt Book Fair press conference during which the Catalan Culture programme, as guest of honour, was officially announced, until 9 October 2007, the official opening day of the 2007 Frankfurt Book Fair. Throughout these twelve months there will be a media campaign to explain to the general public in Catalonia what it means to be the guest of honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair and, above all, there will be a special programme presenting Catalan culture to arts journalists from around the world, as well as a programme of mass sales of Catalan authors’ copyrights prior to the 2007 Frankfurt Book Fair.

In Catalonia and in Germany international congresses and conferences will be organised highlighting various aspects of Catalan culture, announcement will be made of Catalan studies being initiated at important universities around the world, and there will be a variety of exhibitions and performances leading up to the opening of the Frankfurt Book Fair.

2. During the Frankfurt Book Fair: from the official opening on 9 October 2007 until it closes on 14 October 2007. For those five days a total of 2,500 square metres will be used in what is referred to as the Forumspace of the Book Fair, which will house two or three large exhibitions, (including A Thousand Years of Catalan Language and Literature, Barcelona/Catalonia: A Publishing Capital) and where round tables with writers will take place as well as the presentation of Catalan literary works with film potential through the auspices of the CDA (Centre de Desenvolupament Audiovisual - Centre for Audiovisual Development), among other activities.

Outside of the fair venue itself, the city of Frankfurt will be alive with exhibitions, performances and events presenting aspects of Catalan culture. The Frankfurt Book Fair publishes a specific programme focused on the guest of honour that includes all of the exhibitions, performances and planned activities. Daily “after-fair” activities including live performances every evening are planned to attract accredited international participants from the world of publishing.
