Poet, prose writer, publisher, critic and translator. Pere Gimferrer is a member of the Real Academia Española (1985) and of the Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona (1998). He was lauded as a poet with a re-reading of the surrealist experience The Sea is Burning (re-edition: Càtedra, 1994), for which he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Poesía (National Poet’s Prize) (1966). He published a collection of his poetry in Spanish in Poems 1963-1969 and a year later published The Mirrors (Edicions 62, 1977), his first book of poems in Catalan which was awarded the Lletra d’Or Prize. He went on to write Masque, a collection of poems in the form of dialogue and, in the book that followed, The Provocative Agent (Edicions 62, 1998), reflected upon the self-conscious “I” of writing. He has translated works by Llull, March, Beckett, Sade, Brossa and Ferrater to Spanish. His first novel was Fortuny (Planeta 1983), awarded the Ramon Llull prize, and his works as an essayist include Readings of Octavio Paz (Anagrama, 1980) and The Poetry of J.V. Foix (Edicions 62, 1974). His collected articles were published by Edicions 62: Diary: 1979-1980 (1981) and Second Diary: 1980-1982 (1982). Between 1996 and 1997 his Complete Catalan Works (Edicions 62) was published and the following year he received the Premio Nacional de las Letras for the whole of the work. In 2006 he published his two latest titles, both with Seix Barral: Love in Suspense and Blue Interlude.
