King. A production by Gonzalo Cunill and Carlota Subirs, from the novel by John Berger.

2 and 3 October 2007

King is a dog whose owners are Vico and Vica, an elderly couple who live on the Saint Valry waste dump, in the outskirts of some great city. Vico is merely waiting for the end. Vica drinks beer and refuses to give in. King is Vico and Vica's emotive, eloquent testimony, as well as the portrait of a city seen from below. King is the dog with whom everyone shares their jokes, their rage, their despair and their memories. King is the portrait of a world that is harsh and cruel, but also enduring and moving.

King, the latest novel to date by the great British writer John Berger - also a poet, essayist, draftsman, art critic and one of the most lucid and engaged observers of reality, both collective and individual, intimate, in contemporary Europe - is a journey into one of the hidden faces of the capitalist illusion: the world of the homeless, the world of those who, at some point, fell through the system and have been ruthlessly converted into its victims.
