The Frankfurt Book Fair and the Institut Ramon Llull share a stand at the Barcelona book fair

The Frankfurter Buchmesse (Frankfurt Book Fair) and the Institut Ramon Llull (IRL) will share a space at the second Saló del Llibre de Barcelona (Barcelona book fair), which will be held from 21 to 26 November. The two bodies have joined forces to present their main aims and activities at the Frankfurt Book Fair and explain to the public at large what it means to be the guest of honour at the world's most important literary fair. Catalan culture will be the guest of honour at the next Frankfurt Book Fair, which will be held from 10 to 14 October 2007.

The Frankfurter Buchmesse and the IRL will share 84 square metres, which will be divided into three thematic areas: the activities at the next Frankfurt Book Fair; what Catalan culture will be bringing to Frankfurt as the guest of honour, and the dissemination abroad of Catalan language, literature and thought promoted by the Institut Ramon Llull.

Catalan culture's presence in Germany will not be restricted to the five days the Fair lasts. Throughout the year there will be cultural activities in the main German cities. In fact, in March Catalan culture will also be present at the Leipzig Fair.

Translation seminar

The next Saló del Llibre will coincide with the International Seminar on Translation Policies, which is being organised by the IRL and LAF (Literature Across Frontiers), a network of institutions that promote European literatures, of which the IRL forms part. On 24 and 25 November, a group of experts will analyse two reports on the strategies used in various countries for the promotion of literature.

When the Saló del Llibre comes to an end, the first Publishers' Visit promoted by the IRL will begin. In view of the conspicuous presence of Catalan culture in Frankfurt in 2007, publishers from around the world will come to Barcelona to learn of the possibilities of translating Catalan literature into other languagesand to take part in informative sessions on the programme of grants for the translation and promotion of Catalan authors that is offered by the IRL.

The aim of the publishers'visits is to reinforce cooperation between foreign and Catalan publishing companies. The first group of publishers (twelve or so) will arrive on 30 November and stay in Barcelona until 3 December; the second group will arrive on 14 December and leave on the 17th. The visitors will have meetings with publishers and literary agencies, be given information about classic and contemporary works of Catalan literature and be taken on guided visits to the city.
