Catalan experimental music and poetry travel to Munich

From 23 November to 18 December the German city of Munich will be home to the cycle Avantguarda. Música i poesia experimental catalanes (Vanguard. Catalan experimental music and poetry), the aim of which is to show the evolution of the pioneering spirit which characterised Catalan culture in the 20th century. Music and poetry -two disciplines that admit fusion and aesthetic experimentation- will be the vehicles used to evaluate this vanguard movement through recitals and conferences organised jointly by the Institut Ramon Llull, the Instituto Cervantes and various German cultural centres.

On Thursday 23 November Lyrik Kabinett will be host to L'avantguarda literària a Catalunya des de 1918 (The literary vanguard in Catalonia from 1918) consisting of a lecture by Axel Sanjosé and a poetry recital by Cinta Massip. In the 20th century Catalonia saw intense research into literary expression and this was often interleaved with painting and other visual arts. It includes the Futurist proposals of Salvat Papasseit, the post-Surrealism of Foix, the mystical Cubism of Cirlot and Brossa.

The following Thursday, on 30 November, there will be a poetry recital entitled Joc de mots a quatre veus (Word games for four voices) at the Instituto Cervantes with Enric Casasses (from Barcelona), Eduard Escoffet (from the Empordà), Arnau Pons (from Mallorca) and Víctor Sunyol (from Vic). The four poets share the wish to take the phonetic and semantic possibilities of the language to their limit.

On 7 December there will be a concert by the pianist Agustí Fernández and the multimedia artist José Manuel Berenguer at the T-u-b-e Klanggalerie. On 14 December, also at the T-u-b-e Klanggalerie, there will be a performance by the artist Io Casino, a leading figure in Barcelona's experimental underground. On Monday 18 December the prestigious Muffathalle centre will be the setting for the piano concert entitled No al No (No to No) by Carles Santos, a crucial figure in contemporary Catalan musical creation. Finally, the Mosel und Tschechow Galerie will exhibit the "Object Poems-Visual Poems" by the artist Joan Brossa.

Frankfurt 2007

The Munich cycle forms part of the events being organised by the Institut Ramon Llull throughout the year prior to the 2007 Frankfurt Book Fair, at which Catalan culture will be the guest of honour.
